A Grade 3 student at Joe Clark School made it a mission to get a buddy bench on the playground.

Cole Russell, who was in Grade two at the time, was worried about students who were being left out on the playground and thought a buddy bench would be a solution.

First up he talked to his Principal about the idea, then he had to make a presentation to the school council to get the funding for the project.

"It was about a year ago when I saw kids without a friend," said Cole. "I also got some inspiration from another school so I thought we would need one."

Cole practiced his speech a lot for the School Council presentation before going.

"We went to parent council and I did a little speech and we won them over," he said.

Once the council approved the project there was more work to be done.

"There were some catalogues to see what colour we wanted. We also took some pictures of where we wanted it to be."

And he had to help choose what they wanted the bench to say.

So far Cole says he hasn't seen anyone sitting on the bench but he is looking forward to sitting on it.

"Of course, that is what friends are for."
