Unlike many local businesses, a slow week is nothing but good news for the Okotoks Fire Department.

Okotoks Fire Chief Ken Thevenot says the number of calls between July 13 and July 19 were lower than the average week.

"We had one fire," he says. "We had nine public service, which were medical responses, we had zero public hazards reported, we had two alarm system activations and we had two motor vehicle accidents. It was a fairly quiet week for us, we only had 14 responses, and to date (for the year) we're at 611 responses."

Thevenot says the lone fire call can be attributed to the string of wet, rainy days that came in the middle of the week.

"We had one grassfire last week," he says. "So, the moisture definitely helped in that area, with regards to outside fires, for sure."

Thevenot says the entire department was quite busy on Wednesday night, but for a good reason.

"Our team attended the Hometown Heroes night at the Okotoks Dawgs baseball game, which was a great night," he says. "We started to raise the money for the Fill The Boot campaign for the Cancer Foundation, and we raised $2,500 that evening."

Thevenot says the department will be out and about collecting money to "give cancer the boot" this Friday and Saturday, and will present a check at the Okotoks Dawgs game Sunday afternoon.
