The Government of Alberta has broadened the scope of midwifery services in the province.

After additional training, midwives are now able to prescribe a broader amount of maternal health necessities, use ultrasounds, provide prescriptions drugs to induce labour, as well as prescribe and administer vaccines.

The Alberta Government says this broadened scope will allow midwives to maximize their skills and play a bigger role in healthcare across the province.

This will also provide women in rural communities easier access to maternal and health services.

These changes bring Albertan midwifery closer to standards in other provinces and territories.

Over the last two years, increases to midwifery funding has seen a growth of over 400 midwife assisted births.
