On Wednesday August 2 2018, Alberta Environment and Parks Minister Shannon Phillips announced that starting this Fall, prices for seniors hunting licences will be drastically reduced.

Phillips says this change is important because of the significance hunting has for a large amount of senior citizens.

"We know that seniors who participate in outdoor activities such as hunting, enjoy greater social ties, better long-term health outcomes, and lets face it: its just great to get outside, in our parks and our public lands."

Phillips also mentions that younger hunters will have a greater opportunity to find quality older mentors with this change.

"By significantly reducing prices for senior hunters, we are assuring the entire hunter community benefits. Life long hunter have hands on experience and knowledge of the land, and this can benefit younger generations."

According to the press release, Alberta is one of the only places in North America where interest in hunting is steadily increasing.

More than 120,000 Albertan's purchased a hunting licence in 2017, up from 110,000 in the 2014-2015 hunting season.

The release also states that more than 18,500 of hunting licence holders, are aged 65 and over.

This fall, the modified prices for seniors hunters are:

$8.25 for a combination wildlife certificate and bird game permit, down from $44.02

$8.25 for a white-tailed deer licence, down from $39.95.

$12 for partner licences for senior Albertan hunters.
