The Notley government is keeping an eye on what's happening with the new administration in the United States when it comes to trade.

Deron Bilous, Alberta's Economic Development and Trade Minister, says gaining new customers is never a bad idea.

"They are our cousins and our neighbours and will remain a priority for us, but Alberta will also be looking at new opportunities and expanding our market share," Bilous says.

U.S. President Donald Trump has already signed an order pulling out of the Trans Pacific Partnership trade deal.

Bilous says part of the reason he led two trade missions to Asia and will lead another two this year, along with other countries, is the importance of getting Alberta's products to tidewater and to other markets.

He says it's too early to say how President Donald Trump's plan to renegotiate NAFTA may affect Alberta, but there is a shared acknowledgement of Canada's importance to the U.S. and Alberta is a part of that.
