An Edmonton-area Senator says COVID-19 has now hit food inspectors.

Paula Simons tweeted out 40 food inspectors, including 21 from Alberta, have contracted the virus.

Eighteen of those are at the Cargill plant near High River.

In the tweet, Simons says she understands the impact if the plants can't operate, but adds the beef needs to be safe and inspected by healthy, experienced workers.

She says while we can't catch the corona virus from the meat, we still can catch other things that the inspectors are there to find.
