A few local high school students have received a signed award certificate from Alberta Senator Doug Black.

The Doug Black Awards, have been around for some time, but Black says he's specifically interested in recognizing youth, for their academic performance, service and willingness to give back to the community.

This year, 91 student's from all over Alberta received the award, including Avery Sheldon from the JT Foster High School in Nanton, and Alex Chase, Henry McAdle, Kevin Tucker, Matt Haverko, Nico Belanger and Oliver Turski from the Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School in Okotoks.

Black says, "While it's not a full fledged scholarship, we hope it will be a positive reinforcement for students who have demonstrated their commitment to the community."

Black says he wants to make the awards an annual event.
