Seven local athletes are showing off their skills in Medicine Hat this weekend at the Alberta Special Olympics Summer Games.

The athletes are participating in the five pin bowling and swimming events.

Cathy Manson, who accompanied the athletes to the events, says everyone is doing well.

"We arrived yesterday in Medicine Hat, and our five-pin bowling team bowled their first set of three games. Everyone bowled really well; everyone had two super games and one a little less super, but it was a lot of fun."

Manson says the festivities kicked off Friday Night with the opening ceremonies. Approximately 750 people were in attendance, including Canadian speed skater Catriona LeMay Doan and Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, Lois Mitchell.

Manson says everyone is doing great, but the heat wave has forced some modifications for athlete safety.

"They've had to modify some of the events, like softball; they have cut it back to five innings and soccer they are just playing two twenty minute halves. They set up mist tents so you can go in and cool off."

Despite the heat, Manson says the athletes are having a blast competing, and living the Olympic athlete lifestyle in the Olympic Village.
