Albertans will spend more money this Christmas than anyone else in the country.

Figures from the BMO's 2015 Holiday Outlook Report & Consolidated Credit Counselling Services of Canada show Albertans will spend an average of $2,255 each this Christmas on gifts, entertaining and travel.

The closest to us is Atlantic Canadians at $1,733 each.

Executive Director Jeff Schwartz says Albertans' are gambling on better times ahead.

"It's almost like no one's taking caution and said 'to heck with it, we'll figure it out after we've done all the shopping, let's go' and spend, spend, spend! But maybe this is the last vestige for somebody to say the holiday's are here, we love the holidays and we're going to enjoy them the best we can!"

Schwartz says using cash not credit cards and perhaps scaling back on expectations, along with an actual plan for paying down that Christmas debt within two to three months will make January's financial pain easier to bear.

The national average for spending is $1,607.

The breakdown is over four categories of gifts, trips, entertaining and other.

Albertans are $12 dollars over the national average of $610 for gifts, but it's in travel and entertaining where the numbers get skewed.

Albertans, on average according to the report will spend $354 dollars entertaining, with the national average at $239 and $1,202 in travel compared to $682 as the national average.
