A fentanyl dealer believed to be connected to at least one overdose death has been arrested.

Crime Stoppers received multiple tips In July 2015 about a man dealing fentanyl that tipsters claimed was also responsible for providing fentanyl to a man who died as a result in a couple of months earlier and a an investigation by the Calgary Police Service Drug Unit ensued.

On Monday, Dec. 14, 2015, Innisfail RCMP responded to a complaint from a hotel  about one of the guests providing false vehicle information and behaving strangely. When RCMP arrived, they found evidence of drug-related activity and identified one of the men believed to be involved. The Calgary Police Drug Unit was alerted due to the connection to their ongoing investigation into the man’s activities and joined the RCMP in their investigation.

A safe was found in the man's possession containing about $30,000 cash. A vehicle was also searched. In total, approximately $36,000, 46 fentanyl tablets and five grams of cocaine were seized.

It is believed the man involved was distributing fentanyl to a number of Alberta communities, including High River, Okotoks, Calgary, Cochrane, Chestermere, Strathmore, and Claresholm. Tips allege he was distributing about 500 fentanyl tablets per day.

High River RCMP Staff Sergeant Robin Alexander says they need some help before they can lay charges.

"We would have to obtain the details of the CPS investigation, the Calgary City Police investigation, I suspect it's (charges) are unlikely unless there's witnesses that would put them dealing in the High River-Okotoks area," he says. "We would need evidence to support charges."

26-year-old Brian Crane of Okotoks, was charged with two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of proceeds of crime.

The investigation by the CPS Drug Unit continued and on Thursday, Jan. 28, 2016, officers pulled over a vehicle in the community of Deer Run in Calgary. They arrested two occupants, a man and a woman. A search of the vehicle located $355 cash, 61 fentanyl pills, 0.8 grams of cocaine, 1.6 grams of heroin and multiple cell phones.

Crane was again charged with two counts of trafficking in fentanyl, two counts of possession of property obtained by crime, possession of fentanyl for the purpose of trafficking, possession of heroin and possession of cocaine. CRANE will appear in court on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2016, to face the Calgary charges.

19-year-old Rachael Chafe, of Okotoks, is charged with trafficking in fentanyl, possession of fentanyl for the purpose of trafficking, possession of heroin and possession of cocaine. She will next appear in court on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2016.

Staff Sergeant Alexander says the RCMP is aware that fentanyl is in the community and in the surrounding areas. He says they've been working to educate the public about the dangers of the drug, particularly in the schools, letting students know their first pill could be their last.

He says they've even heard of groups getting together and one person tries a pill and if they don't collapse or go into seizures the others follow suit in a kind of Russian Roulette.
