The Town of High River has a full day planned for their 12th annual Community Green Sweep.

On May 7 people of all ages can enjoy a free breakfast at 8am at the Fire Hall and then pitch in by raking leaves, collecting branches, and picking up garbage around town until noon.

Community Services Interim Administration Assistant Pat Markley says the event is open to everyone.

"It's a great opportunity to teach your kids about pride in the community and cleaning things up and just making the town look really beautiful. Any age can volunteer. If all you can do is just a small area that's fine. If you want to get really ambitious and get some friends together and do like an entire street, then that would be wonderful too."

She says they'll also be starting the day with a Black-Knot workshop to help people deal with the spreading fungus.

"It's really kind of exploded the last 2 or 3 years. I know the parks department's been dealing with it. A lot of residents have been calling our parks staff asking how do I prune this and how do I dispose of the branches once I prune them off?"

Markley says Arborist Darlene Donovan will lead the workshop and will have a map identifying areas where the town needs help pruning away the disease.

She says anyone interested in the workshop is asked to bring their own hand-pruners.

She says after the Community Green Sweep everyone is invited for some community fun.

"It's called the Get Connected Community Barbecue and it's open to everyone. You don't have to be a green sweep volunteer to do that. So we're going to have food, and we're going to have music. We'll have the Neighborhood Block Party Trailer there. You can take tours of the Fire Hall and see inside the fire trucks and you can meet other residents and just connect with old friends."

Markley says the town is also having an electronics recycling drop-off point, where people can bring things like unwanted televisions, computers, and printers.

She says from May 2-7 the town will also pay the tipping fees for High River residents taking non-commercial residential waste to the Foothills Regional Landfill.
