The new federal government is talking about changing the rules around how elections are decided in the future.

Foothills MP John Barlow says the Liberals brought up the issue of electoral reform during the election campaign, but they haven't provided any information on whether it would be small tweaks or a huge overhaul.

"We had put forward at that time that any type of electoral reform should be decided in a referendum, so now the Liberals say they're going to go ahead with these changes without a referendunm and that is very concerning to us," Barlow says. "Anytime that you are making a change to one of the fundamentals of our democracy is how your vote is counted and how your government is shosen, I think that has to go to the people."

He says the Liberals may have the majority of seats in parliament but they don't have the majority of canadian's votes on their side to make such a drastic change to the system.

Barlow says the petition isn't asking people to pick one system over another, it simply urges the Liberal government to hold a referendum on the issue.
