Highwood MLA Wayne Anderson isn't shying away from a little competition for his party's nomination in the riding.

Dean Leask has put his hat into the ring and will try to win the UCP nomination in Highwood heading into the next election.

Anderson, who like Leask, made the jump from party volunteer to getting elected, says it's tough to do.

"Taking the leap from being a volunteer to being a full time politician is quite the chasm to cross. But I wish him best of luck. I mean, there's lots of opportunity out there if this doesn't work. There's going to be other things I'm sure. It's democracy in action and you know I'm really grateful that a lot of people are showing interest at the critical time when this province needs some good people."

Both candidates are going through the vetting process now, if they pass muster, local UCP members will vote to see which one carries the party's banner into the 2019 provincial election.

No dates have been set for the nomination vote.
