With the official arrival of Spring on March 20, those of us who love to garden are starting to get itchy fingers.

With the end of March in sight, Katrina Diebel, the owner of Vale's Greenhouse in Black Diamond has some advice for those of us who would like to rush out and stock up with seeds and dirt.

"Lots of customers are now getting itchy fingers to start planting things in the ground and on the window sills," Diebel said.  Unless you have grow lights, the plants can get long and spindly.

"My recommendation is to wait till the end of March until you start planting things on the shelf and the window sills that will give you the best opportunity to get the best plants."

It is time, however, to get your seed orders in.  "Instead of getting all anxious to get your seeds planted, why don't you sit down with a strong nice cup of tea and look through your seed catalogues."  She says you need to research how long it takes to start different plants and if they can be directly seeded outside.

"You might just find some real gems, just by going through the catalogues again."

She added it's a good idea to visit lots of garden centres to check out their seed racks because everyone has a different variety.

"Going to several different garden centres you will find top quality seeds for sure," Diebel said.

And when you get the seeds home, store them in a cool dark place to keep them fresh for seeding.

"Always keep your seeds in a fridge, a frost free one if possible."
