The High River Rec-plex will be hosting a triathlon on Sunday July 29 2018,  for cancer prevention and research.

Race director for the Tri The Triathlon Challenge Maggie Bowen says this year, High River will be exclusively funding, hosting and organizing the event.

"Im doing this exclusively as a High Riverite. In the past we have paired up with organizations in Edmonton who don't share the same kind of community connection, so this year we wanted to work exclusively with local businesses to make this happen. So far they have all been supportive and fantastic."

Bowen says athletes have a variety of distances and activities they can participate in.

"The triathlon will feature swimming, biking and running in 5K and 10K courses. Athletes can also opt into an Olympic length swim distance, or choose the duathlon; which consists of running, biking and then a final run."

The proceeds raised from the run all go towards the Ride To Conquer Cancer and the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary.

Bowen says she hopes to see lots of locals at the Rec-plex cheering on the athletes.

"We have around 40 participants this year, and for some of them, its there first time competing in something like this. I think local support will go a long way in this event."

Check-in for the participants starts at 7am at the High River Rec-plex, with events starting at 8am.
