The Town of High River is looking for feedback on allowing backyard chicken coops and bee hives.

Mayor Craig Snodgrass says he can't think of any good reason not to allow them in the town.

He says when it comes to honey bees it's actually a very serious issue.

"Anything we can do to promote bee populations we should be doing because it's not a small issue, it's a massive, massive issue for food production and everything else in this country, not in this country, on earth, period," Snodgrass says. "All the pesticides and everything else we've thrown around are knocking these guys off and we've got to help them out."

The current Animal Control Bylaw would permit chicken coops and/or beehives but only with the permission of the Town’s Chief Administrative Officer.

Overall, the mayor says he's very much in favour.

"I think it's kind of cool, I don't see a big negative to any of it all all, not noise, not smell, nothing," he says. "There's is nothing for myself, and others, than a yappy dog, and we allow tens of thousands of them in our communities."

There's a survey on the Town's website and council will publicly discuss the issue at the Mon. June 22 meeting.

He doesn't expect it to be a long drawn out process.
