A sense of civic duty has lead Julie Barker to run for a councillor position in the Nanton Municipal Election.

She decided she wanted to be more involved and contribute to the community her family has called home for 10 years.

Barker says she is very much interested in what is going on in the world for politics.

"I've been an armchair viewer for the sport of politics and how it goes," said Barker. "But I am really interested in understanding why are the decisions being made. What are the challenges that are facing municipalities especially for growth and being vibrant."

On nomination day when the town didn't have enough people come forward they added one more day for people to file their paperwork and that was all the nudge she needed so she put her name forward and join in.

With a second day open for council nominations Nanton went from having five run to 11.

Barker says she needs to understand and to be more than just a critic of the local government.

"I need to investigate the other side. Learning about the municipalities and learning about policies is very important."

Barker is concerned about water, aging infrastructure and local business.

"I'd like to see some new small footprint businesses come into Nanton. Hopefully something that is going to encourage internship from local kids because it is important that they want to stay in a smaller town even though we have the big lights an hour away."
