Long weekends are always busy on area highways as people load up the car to go to a favourite vacation spot, visit family or just go out for dinner.

Sgt. Brent Hawker says this weekend is extra long, which gives people a chance to travel further away from home.

"When people head out we just ask that people use caution," said Hawker. "This time of year you don't know how the weather is going to be."

Especially if you are going to Northern Alberta.

"You run the risk of coming on to freezing rain and or snow so just slow down and leave plenty of space between you and the vehicle in front of you."

He also advises to make sure you have plenty of time to get where you are going.

And while winter is over, you might just want to keep that survival kit in the trunk for a few more days.

"The weather can change at a moments notice so we encourage people to still carry that equipment with them," he said.

His final advice, keep your speed in check.
