Summer is here and the highways are packed with cars, trucks, campers and motorcycles as everyone heads off on their hoildays.

Cpl. Blair Schneider says both drivers of motor vehicles and bikes need to pay special attention to avoid collisions.

"You see a dramatic increase in motorcycles over the summer," said Schneider."We like to remind everyone to remain cognicent of the fact that these guys are on the road, men and women, and to give them sufficient room."

Changing lanes into motorcycles is a big cause of crashes.

"Quite often they are in their blind spot. And a reminder to motorcyclists if you can't see them (the drivers) in their side mirror, then they can't see you as well."

There are also a lot of fundraiser's which involve motorcyclists and their bikes with big numbers of them on the highways at one time.

"There is going to be poker runs and all kinds of different fundraiser activities, and bikers just coming to our community just for a ride."

"we have to be careful and watch out for motorcycles throughout the summer months."

Schneider also said make sure you don't follow them too closely, and do a through shoulder check before changing lanes.
