As of the month of November any new home being built will be under a new building code that will in the long run benefit your energy bill but may also put the average cost of homes up.

New energy requirements will be implemented for all builders to follow.

Permit and Assessment Manager for the Town Rob Mueller says you'll notice it in future new residential homes in Okotoks.

"The province has adopted the National Energy Code of Canada, so as of November 1st, 2016 the Alberta Building Code Part 936 and the National Energy Code will be enforced by municipalities across Alberta," he says.

Mueller says with conversations between the Town and current builders they've all been aware of the changes for quite some time.

"Based on talking to the construction industry of home builders within Okotoks there are some cost impacts that will be affiliated with compliance to the National Energy Code, those impacts could range from minimal dollars to significant dollars."

He says with there have been many changes to energy efficiency in homes over time but energy saving windows have been the most extensive in change and price.

"Windows have come under a new guideline starting in the spring of 2016 so you don't see more of the triple pane or more sealed units coming into the industry which is part of the actual energy code itself too."
