Agriculture producers around Alberta and Canada are excited about a World Trade Organization ruling that gives Canada the green light to impose a billion dollars of tariffs on the U.S.

It's all in response to the Americans insistence on keeping up with Country of Origin Labelling, or "COOL."

Foothills M.P. John Barlow says what happens next is up to the new Liberal Government.

"I know this is something when we were in government we hammered on substantially. This is a very costly piece of legislation for Canadian producers. It cost our producers at least a billion dollars a year, but at least getting the billion dollars in tariffs, at least we know we have some tools to take action against the United States if the U.S. Senate doesn't take action to repeal COOL."

Originally Canada had argued for three billion dollars in retaliatory tariffs.

Barlow says they'll push the Trudeau Liberals to not just threaten with the go ahead for Tariffs, but to actually use them if they have to.

Barlow says he'd rather see the Americans back down, as the W-T-O has come in on Canada's side since the Americans brought in the legislation.

Barlow argues the legislation is just as hard on U.S. Producers and packing plants as it is on Canadian ones and doesn't benefit anyone.

Barlow says U.S. products likely targeted with retaliatory tariff's would likely be from the agricultural sector as well.
