As expected, the bylaw for banning public consumption of cannabis in High River passed both the second and third hearing at the Town Council meeting Monday, October 9

What was surprising was that not one single resident came forward to oppose, approve, or share their thoughts on the matter.

As of Wednesday, October 17 when marijuana becomes legal across the country, there will be no public areas to consume the substance in High River

One resident did come forward towards the end of the meeting, asking council to consider opening up the discussion of specified public consumption sites such as marijuana bars and lounges, or outdoor areas as well.

His concern was for people who rent.

Most landlords do not want marijuana consumed on their property and many community areas around apartment buildings will not allow it either.

This would mean renters have nowhere to go legally to consume a legal substance, which he doesn't think is right.

Town council liked the idea but say the chances of any approvals being made before the 2019 provincial election wouldn't be likely, due to it being a concern of the AGLC.

Until then, the only bylaw in place prohibits cannabis use in public spaces in High River.
