The third annual High River Charity Checkstop goes Thursday Dec 10.

Sergeant Brent Hawker, with the local RCMP detachment, says they'll have an afternoon checkstop set up on Centre Street between 4 and 5 Avenue where people can make a voluntary cash or food donation.

"We ask people who are going through the checkstop is they would like to, if they're willing to make a cash donation that will go to either Rowan House (women's shelter) or to Foothills Victim's Services Unit or if they'd like to donate food stuffs they'll go to the Salvation Army Food Bank," Sgt. Hawker says.

There will be representatives from the local RCMP, High River Fire Department, Community Services and the Municipal District of Foothills who'll be joined by Rowan House, Victim's Services and the Salvation Army for the event.

Sgt. Hawker says last year they brought in around $5,000 and about 250 pounds of food and while even with the poor economy this year he's hoping they can do the same this year.

And there will be hot chocolate from Tim Horton's, candy canes and Santa himself.
