A cougar sighting in Okotoks this past weekend has residents on alert.

On Saturday a resident reported seeing a cougar chasing a deer in the river valley.

A sign has been posted at the walking bridge near Woodhaven to inform residents of the sighting.

The Town's Parks Manager Christa Michailuck says it's not an abnormal year for cougar sightings in the Foothills.

"We usually have two or three sightings reported to the Town per year, and people really should report those sightings at the time to Fish and Wildlife," said Michailuck.

Fish and Wildlife determine on a case-by-case basis whether they will dispatch an officer.

Michailuck stressed it's important for residents to remember the river valley is a nature corridor, and they should expect to run into wildlife when using paths around town.

"Recognize that, and be prepared as you can," advised Michailuck. "Keep your eyes open, keep small children close by, and keep your animals on a leash, that kind of thing."

It's believed cougars follow prey, and the town's deer population is likely a big attraction for predators.

Michailuck says one way to prevent cougars from showing up in your yard is to keep the area clear of prey.
