High River council has chosen the two murals that will adorn a couple of buildings downtown next spring.

Council received a recommendation from the Ad Hoc Mural Committee to approve the mural showing horse's legs galloping through water and another with a pastoral scene with hot air balloons and people enjoying themselves.

Sarah Mitchell, the towns' Parks and Culture Coordinator, says before the town can move forward, agreements have to be reached with the owners of the buildings where the murals will go.

"The buildings that are being proposed are on the south side of Highwood Printing and that would be option four, the one with the circle with the balloons," Mitchell says. "The other building that's being proposed is the west side of the Servus Credit Union, and that would be the one with the horses."

The murals will be painted off-site on panels and attached to the buildings next spring.

"Should anything ever happen in the future, say there's damage to the building or the murals themselves need to be repaired, any number of factors the murals not being directly attached to the building will enable them to be taken off, repaired and then put back on or moved to another location," she says.

She says they had over 3,300 votes cast for the six murals that were up for consideration either through the town's web site or on paper at Town facilities.

Mitchell says the public's support and feedback has been crucial throughout the process.
