Fighting rural crime and increasing membership are some of the goals for the rural crime watch meeting scheduled for Tuesday, April 10 in Okotoks.

Attendees at the meeting, hosted by the M.D. of Foothills, will include members of four rural crime watch groups, RCMP members, politicians and justice department representatives.

Vice President of the Foothills Rural Crime Watch Association, Chris Linnington, says one of the goals of meeting, is to increase communications, and educate residents by sharing ideas on how to protect their property.

"We're hoping at our information nights that people are able to walk away with something that may be of use to them for their own endeavours at their properties."

Preventative measures are one of the best defences for rural residents to protect their property, and according to Linnington, posting a rural crime watch sign is an effective tool.

"We're an extra set of eyes and ears for the police and for the community. I personally believe the signs help."

Linnington also mentioned the M.D. of Foothills is really stepping up and has become an important ally in support of rural crime watch and prevention.

"They've recognized this is a problem, and are providing information to the public and promoting our crime watch groups."

The meeting goes on Tuesday, April 10, at the Foothills Centennial Centre in Okotoks at 7 p.m.
