February is Distracted Driving month in Alberta but in High River RCMP are not making any extra plans to go after drivers talking on the phone.

Staff Sergeant Robin Alexander says distracted driving is a focus of the detachment every day.

"Distracted driving has been one of our focuses throughout the year," said Alexander. "It is one of the leading causes of avoidable injury collisions in Canada now. It ranks right up there with impaired driving."

As a result Alexander says it is a detachment priority to be on the lookout for distracted driving.

"One of our detachment priorities is to pay special attention to people who are using hand held devices or otherwise are distracted driving. While we don't have anything special planned we are always on the lookout."

He hope the message will eventually get through.

"It is going to take continued efforts of the part of the police and education to get on top of this particular issue, it's become a major problem."
