High River Town Council will take part in an emergency management training session to help them get the word out in times of trouble.

Director of Emergency Management Carly Benson says feedback from the community and responders in the Medicing Tree Manor fire said the response was very well coordinated, but council wanted to know more about what their role should be during an emergency.

"One of the questions that came from a couple of councillors was what should they be doing? As the mayor stated in council, he wasn't quite sure if he needed to be at the scene or what he was supposed to be doing. So this is a chance for us to go over what it is that we would like council to be doing to be reinforcing the good work that everybody else is doing."

She says that during a crisis it's important to have council get the news out to residents.

"One of the most important things that council can do in an emergency is help us to spread the message. So we saw a number of our councillors using their Facebook or social media sites to ask residents to look for ember on their houses because we had a lot of ash and smoke falling from the sky and there was some concern about potentially causing secondary fires."

Benson says the session will help council get the information they need faster.

"I think council's actually well-equipped to do their job. They're used to talking to people, to residents and that's what we really need them to be doing. So we just need to tighten up some of our internal procedures to just make sure they're getting all the information that they need in a timely manner, we just need to enable that flow of communication."

She says council was instrumental in warning residents during the Medicine Tree Manor fire.
