Wednesday (Jan.27) is Family Literacy Day and schools are celebrating the magic of books.

According to Tracy Tuttosi, learning commons facilitator with Dr. Morris Gibson School, they've been busy all month celebrating Literacy Month with today being their dress-up day.

"Kids can either dress up as their favourite book character if they like, or they can wear their pyjamas and be a character in Robert Munsch's book Pyjama Day," explained Tuttosi.

The school has been celebrating with virtual guests joining the class and reading to the kids.

"We go all month bringing in readers; this year we've done it all through Zoom and it's been alright. I was worried it wouldn't be quite as fun, and maybe it hasn't, but the kids have loved it."

January would normally wrap with a “Drop Everything and Read” (DEAR) time with all the kids' families, however, this year it will just have to be the kids enjoying DEAR.

"We would invite families in to read with us and the school would be full: every nook and cranny filled with families reading.  This year it will just be us, but we said we were going to make the best of this year, so we are going to have fun with it."

Tuttosi added the goal of the month is to have kids fall in love with reading.
