An SUV rollover in the M.D. of Foothills has claimed the life of a young man.

Monday morning, M.D. of Foothills Fire and RCMP, along with EMS units from Priddis and Calgary responded to an SUV rollover on 178th Avenue near Coalmine Road.

STARS Air Ambulance had been called to the scene, but the call was cancelled once Priddis crews arrived.

Stuart Brideaux, Public Education Officer with Alberta Health Services, says there were three people in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

"A woman in her early twenties was able to climb out from the overturned vehicle after it had came to a stop and was able to retrieve the infant from her car carrier in the backseat," he says. "Unfortuntately, a male in his mid twenties, the driver, had become partially pinned under the vehicle and was pronounced deceased by paramedics on scene."

The woman and infant were taken to hospital in stable, non-life threatening condition.

Brideaux says the two month old girl's car seat kept her safe.

"It's very forutnate she was otherwise properly restrained in a rear facing infant car carrier system which kept her encapsulated until the woman was able to retrieve her out," he says. "This incident shows a properly installed base as well as a properly locked in car carrier system is the only safe way to move an infant in a vehicle."

Brideaux says while investigation continues, it's believed the vehicle rolled after attempting to avoid a deer.
