This is Fire Prevention Week.

High River Fire Chief Len Zebedee says the focus of this special week is smoke detectors.

"The focus this year is smoke detectors, again, to make sure that you've got working smoke detectors in your house and that they're checked twice a year and if they're ten years old you should think about replacing them," Zebedee says. "About ten years is the life of a smoke detector, some will last longer but we recommend that you change them within that ten year period.

Zebedee says generally smoke detectors have a ten-year life span and the date of expiry is stamped inside it.

He says when you change your clock ahead one hour for Daylight Savings Time in the spring, or when you move it back an hour in the fall, you should check them to make sure the batteries are still good.

He says carbon monoxide detectors usually have a shorter life span.
