Studying chemistry turned into a business degree, which when combined with the economic downturn, lead Kevin Guichon to take the brewmasters course at Olds College.

Which is a good thing for High River as he is about to open the first craft brewers in the community.

Guichon said as soon as the permits all come through the High River Brewing Company will be up and running.

"It is a five barrel brewery. So that is about 600 litres per brew. We've got fermentation capacity for about 12,000 litres."

There will be a tasting room so people can come and try it out and they will be able to fill growlers.

The Okotoks native said there were a few reasons to open in town, first up Okotoks has a craft brewer working to open and there were water issues in the community so he decided to look further south.

He met with Mayor Craig Snodgrass and was very impressed with the reception he got.

"He was probably the most excited person about the project. He is very big on re-building High River. Bringing people back to High River. So he was very excited about business coming here."

Guichon added, they will be doing four core beers to start with and seasonal beers every three or four months.
