The High River Flyers made a surprise appearance before town council at its meeting Monday.

Coach Tyson Avery says they wanted to let the town know they're willing to help whereever possible.

"We want to be out in the senior's homes playing cards or having fun with them, helping out with as many fundraiser's as we can for the community, helping out at the high schools, the elementary schools, anything the town needs and asks from us, we just want to be there to help them," he says.

He says they had three players assisting at the recent Terry Fox Run and Walk and they had a great time and, from the feedback they got, their help was really appreciated.

Avery says this is something new for the team.

"We did nothing like this last year, these are all just ideas we all came up with at the board and we're just trying to get into town and showing people we're here to help and care," he says.

They have their annual Pink the Rink night to raise money and awareness about breast cancer coming up as well as a military night in conjunction with the King's Own Calgary Regiment which has set up shop at the High River Airport.

Avery told council they're talking about Junior "A" hockey coming to the town.

"It's been a thought that's been tossed around at the board, at the organization, it would be a big step but it's been tossed around, we've talked about it a few times and we're just trying to keep our options open if we ever could move up, it would be nice to move up," he says.

The team is also looking for people to volunteer. Call Angie Groeneveld at the High River Administration building at 403-652-2110 if you'd like to help.
