A big day Friday for Foothills Catholic Immigrant Services in High River.

They threw the doors open on their new headquarters just above Sari Sari on Centre Street.

Temporary Foreign Worker Settlement worker and Community Coordinator Myrna Scovoranski says the new office space is well suited to their needs.

"I believe that we have better accessibility, that adding an elevator to the situation certainly makes it easier for people that have mobility issues obviously, and of course we have a lot of young families that have strollers and things like that so two flights of stairs without an elevator makes it a bit awkward and we want to be welcoming, which is part of what we do," she says.

The office works with temporary foreign workers, visitors, permanent residents and recently with Syrian families and the groups that brought them to High River.

"You can imagine moving to a new community where you don't speak the language, move to a new country where you don't speak the language, everything is brand new, finding a place to live, learning how the income tax system works, the education, the health care system, it's a large community orientation, it's a country orientation, it's a life orientation," Scovoranski says.

She says they also have a new neighbour move in. Under the umbrella of the Foothills Muslim Association, the High River Islamic Centre has just opened. The United Church for years opened up their doors for Friday prayers but the group has outgrown that space and moved in alongside Foothills Catholic Immigrant Services.
