A pair of changes are in store for the Foothills Highland Games this year.

The games will be taking place one month earlier on July 29.

David Roe, chair of the Foothills Highland Games, says the date change seemed like the best way to help boost attendance.

"We've had to do some number crunching and soul searching as to how to improve our games and get them to be bigger," Roe says. "A number of issues we've had in the past are lower attendance from pipe bands due to conflicts with other competitions so there was a number of things that factored into the date change that we had."

Aside from a change in date, the games will also see a change in venue.

The field at Foothills Composite High School will be undergoing a bit of construction this summer due to issues with methane levels on the field earlier this year, which means the games will now be held at St. John Paul II Collegiate School in Cimarron.

Roe says it isn't a permanent venue for future games.

"I'm looking at it as just a stop over for this year, it's in a neighbourhood and we want to be good neighbours. So we don't want to impact traffic or annoy the neighbours in the area so ideally the Comp field was the best, however, we will continue to work with the Town on finding a suitable location to move forward in the future."

The games are looking for sponsorships, new board members, and volunteers.
