Breaking out the raincoats and umbrellas is a good idea tonight as heavy rain and a possibility of snow is forecasted for the next 24 to 48 hours.

Kirk Torneby, Meteorologist with Environment Canada says there's a system developing over Southern British Columbia and Idaho which will push up through Southern Alberta very soon.

"It will really set in around later this evening when the rain starts," he says. "You could see rainfall amounts towards 20 to 40 mm as things taper off tomorrow night."

He adds there's a chance you could also see some snow as well over the next 24 hours.

"There's a lot of cold air pushing with system so freezing levels may drop overnight to 200-300 m so there is a chance we could see some white stuff, especially overnight."

Torneby shares the good news is we could be getting the usual May Long weekend rain dump out of the way early, as temperatures are expected to regulate by the end of the week.

While the Foothills may see minimal amounts of snow, Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for Kananaskis, Pincher Creek, Crowsnest Pass and Waterton areas.
