The Foothills School Division has banned vaping as part of its Smoke-Free Environment Administration Procedure.

Trustee Jeannine Tucker says there are serious risks involved that many youth haven't looked into.

"Some of the vapes include nicotine, so you're going to have the same addiction that smoking has. But if they do a little tiny bit of research and look it up the vape itself, some of the chemicals in there, can cause popcorn lung and it makes little holes in your lungs."

Tucker says vaping was brought out as a way to stop smoking, but is being used by kids as an alternative to smoking. She says kids don't understand the inherent risks of vaping.

"They need to look at some of the risks involved because, I mean, there are no rules. So they assume with no rules that that means there are no risks. And everything comes with risks in life. So I would suggest to all young people that they need to research that before they go down that road."

Tucker says she's hopeful this addition to the procedure will help ths issue by giving administrators something concrete to show parents and students.

"I think what it does is it gives administrators a place to say look, this is where it is. So it's not just one person saying no you can't do it. It's across the division, everybody's saying no you can't do this."

Tucker urges youth and parents to take time to look up the risks and make an informed decision before vaping.
