Some evacuees from Fort McMurray have made their way south into the Foothills and are calling the Lions Campground home for the near future.

Darren and Jeannie Krushelniski packed up what they could in the fire ravaged city and fled like the 88,000 thousand others making Fort McMurray home.

He says the support was overwhelming by those at the campground and those in the community offering a helping hand.

"When we pulled in there was nothing but awesomeness from the people here," he says. "They got us set-up right away and I can't say enough about the people that have took in here and gave us a campsite for as long as we needed to get set back up and that takes a whole load off our brain".

The Krushelniski's did check in at a evacuation centre in Lac La Biche before heading further south and says experiencing what other members of the Fort McMurray community were going through was hard to witness.

"We went to the evacuation centre and that's kind of when it started to hit us when we saw all the people in the evacuation centre. We're set up better than most we've got our camper we're basically self sufficient . But there's so many people that don't have a bed they don't have nothing, they don't even have their wallet or ID. They don't have pennies to rub together."

Fort McMurray was officially under evacuation last Tuesday when the fire breached the Athabasca River and made it into parts of the city, Krushelnski says before the fire got close to buildings it was business as usual for his work with Shell.

"Tuesday morning I got up at 4 to go to work the wind had changed the fire was heading west. Went to work like nothing else, about noon my wife got a hold of me and said 'Darren the hills are on fire, the fire is right in behind the houses and I said well you may as well get the camper and get it ready to go."

Krushelniski says they were lucky enough to already be prepared to come down to Okotoks as his son is starting a supplement store that should be open by the end August.

They said they're not sure about their future plans if and when they'll go home but with Darren's ability to fly into work they may use their downtown condo as a means for housing for others who may not have anywhere to go.

Currently the campground 15 site reserved off for those evacuated from Fort McMurray.
