The Foothills School Division is pleased with their financial position heading into the new year.

This is from the results of their 2014-2015 financial statement.

In the past year the division saw revenues of $95, 533, 495, and expenses of $95, 752, 748, resulting in a deficit of $219, 253.

Drew Chipman, assistant superintendent, says the division in a good place leading into 2016.

"We're anticipating a deficit again this year," he says. "We've had a surplus the last couple of years so we're planning on drawing that down and using those dollars to provide additional help and supports for our staff and for our students."

Chipman says the division has ran a surplus for the last couple years and is predicting another one for the upcoming year.

Chipman says a bulk of their dollars are spent on staffing.

"The Government of Alberta is our primary funding, we get grants based on the number of students we have." Chipman says. "If you take out kind of the anomaly of flood dollars that are flowing through the system, around 90% of our dollars come from the province, it's where it should be for a system like ours. The expense side, we're providing those services to kids and that's what we do when we're hiring our staff."

Currently FSD has 458 full or part time teachers and 341 full or part time support staff, which equals to about 74% of the divisions expenditures, or 77% if custodial costs are included.

Enrolment is up for the division with about 100 students above their predictions for this year. Chipman says the growth is exciting as they continue to plan for the future with new capital projects.
