Students in the Foothills School Division head back to class starting Tuesday, September 4.

Acting Superintendent Pamela Rannelli says as always they have certain focuses for students heading into the new school year, and this year they're keeping it simple.

"Focus on literacy and numeracy and focus on critical thinking, problem solving, all those competencies that kids need to have to be successful when they leave school. Because we're trying to prepare kids for jobs we don't even know yet exist."

Rannelli says they're seeing an average year for new teachers and yearly turnover.

"I know we have around 13 brand new teachers, that are brand new to the profession. We have 40 new teachers to the FSD. Now, that isn't 40 extra positions, that's just 40 new teachers. Some of them are replacing retirements and that sort of thing."

Rannelli says they're waiting for the Province to come out with their new draft for the K-to-4 curriculum, which has generated some pushback from Alberta's opposition parties.
