For the past few weeks motorists have benefited greatly with the recent price break at the pumps locally.

Senior Petroleum Analyst with GasBuddy.com Dan McTeague says wholesale prices have lead to a fair price just about everywhere.

"We've seen over the past week a better than five to seven cents wholesale price decrease," he says. "So for gasoline stations who were paying 86 or 87 cents a litre to buy gasoline, today they can get it for 78 to 79 cents a litre. That's really why we've seen prices drop as dramatically as they have."

With little changes in the way oil refineries in both Canada and the US are producing gasoline, McTeague says these prices could drop a little bit more.

"It's good news and it's likely to see lower prices at least for the foreseeable future. There's nothing really out there that's suggesting any type of disruption that could see prices spike again. Frankly this is the price that we should be paying for this time of year especially given the lower values for crude and gasoline futures."

McTeague says he's not surprised at the current price of fuel in Alberta.

"I think it's very good for consumers who have been probably paying a premium of about ten cents a litre since the end of September something we don't often see at this time of year. Demand tends to drop, output by our refineries in Canada have not been really disturbed all that much and so we were paying in the mid into the upper 90 cents range."
