The issue of Gay-Straight Alliances were a big topic of conversation during the first week of the Fall sitting of the legislature this past week in Edmonton.

The NDP tabled legislation making it illegal for schools to "out" kids to their parents if they join a GSA, unless under certain circumstances.

Livingstone/Macleod MLA Pat Stier says the idea requires debate before passing.

"People believe, and I think they should, that parents should be involved with how their children are raised, and when something comes up to change how that's been done for many years, people want to be involved and they want to have their opinions known, so we can ensure that the legislation is the best it can possibly be."

In the past UCP Leader Jason Kenney has said he'd like to see schools inform parents if their children join a GSA, while others say joining a GSA is no different than kids joining any other school club which doesn't require the school to inform parents.
