The long stretch between New Year's and Easter without a holiday was taken care of years ago by then-premier Don Getty.

He established Family Day in Alberta and this year it falls on Mon. Feb. 15.

Cynthia Farrow with the Town of High River says the community helps them to put on family events at the Bob Snodgrass Rec-Plex that day.

"We look for sponsorship and we give local businesses a chance to get on board and help us provide these activities and we try to raise money throughout the year as well," Farrow says. "We what we can with the budget we have and every little bit helps."

Farrow says it gives everyone a chance to get out and socialize and meet other people in the community, let the kids play together and just relax.

She says there's free swimming and skating along with carnival games, free hot dogs and free hot chocolate.

It goes from 1 to 4 p.m. on Feb. 15.
