An ad Hoc Committee has come up with two proposed additional community gardens in High River.

The group studied 14 different sites before it landed on the pair it set to town council.

Chair Leslie Scrimshaw and Matt Kristiansen said some just weren't suitable. For instance they looked at the area behind the Rec Plex, but it's used as an overflow campground and weddings are sometimes held there.

Right now the only community garden is at Sheppard Family Park and there isn't room for anyone there.

"Because right no I think there's 30 or 40 people on  a waiting list so I think there are going to be people that move from the Sheppard Family Park to some of the other locations that are closer to their house, hopefully with-in walking distance," says Kristiansen.

They recommended a large park space along Riverside Drive N.W., south of Notre Dame Collegiate and the space next to the outdoor skating rink at the Town Farm in McLaughlin Meadows.

The Town has received a grant for $10,000 from the TD Bank's Friends of the Environment Foundation.

The committee has also asked Council to consider covering the cost of the water tie-in for both sites so there's water available for irrigation.

They'd like to work start on the garden this fall so they'd be ready in time for spring planting.

Council sent it back to administration to gather further information including consultations with neighbours.
