The Halifax 57 Rescue is taking some big steps this Summer as they try to get a sunken World War II Halifax bomber out of the ocean near Sweden and back to the Bomber Command Museum in Nanton for restoration.

Museum Director Karl Kjarsgaard is in Sweden and says it's a long process because most of those helping out are donating their time and energy to the project.

"So we're mostly weekend warriors working on saving Canadian history. But they're fully supportive and they love saving history. Because we've got the salvage permit, we're allowed to salvage the entire airplane. It's just a wonderful cooperative between Canada and Sweden."

Kjarsgaard says he hopes to have the airframe salvaged by Summer's end, and back in Nanton either late this year, or by next spring, where they can begin the long restoration process.
