It was just over a year ago High River's Heaven Can Wait Animal Shelter put out the S.O.S. for donations, prompting donations of over $100,000 through a Go Fund Me page.

Owner Kim Hessel says they're doing alright now, but she's still mighty grateful for the support.

"You know a year later, I'm still in awe of how the community did step up, and not just High River, but Okotoks, Calgary, like all the various people that did come up to help us. And what it did tell me was that the service we provide to the community has value. And people recognize that and they were willing to help us continue."

Hessel says they're still working away trying to get their charitable status, which she says will help with future donations as they'll be able to give tax receipts.
