High River council passed a $26-million interim operating budget at its meeting on Monday.

Mayor Craig Snodgrass says they needed to get something in place in accordance with provincial rules.

"We knew this was coming because of the election, there's just so much going on you have to pass a budget by the end of the year and with so much going on with the election and stuff, Jamie (Kinghorn) and Carol (MacMillan) have to be brought up to speed as to where we're at financially before you can even start talking about the budget," he says.

He says they will start that process early in the new year.

The interim budget does not include any capital projects.

They'll come to council in early February.

Council also passed a new Fees and Rates bylaw, although utilities, like garbage, water and sewer rates will come back in a separate bylaw in the new year.
