The High River Gift of Music Society is launching their first concert of the new decade with a trip to the Moon.

The group "WindSync" from Houston, Texas will be in High River for a couple of shows Friday, February 7 and Saturday, February 8, featuring a piece specifically written to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the July 1969 Apollo 11 mission to the Moon.

Gift of Music Founding Artistic Director, Michèle Wheatley-Brown, says the group is well known in classical music circles around the world.

"They are a really dynamic and engaging group of young musicians who have played all over the world including Carnegie Hall and are very popular."

The show Friday is at the Highwood Golf & Country Club starting at 7:30 p.m. and will include a dinner and of course a "Spacy" theme.

"The first half of the program has sort of a space theme, where there's a special celebration of the Moon landing and they've had a piece commissioned for that and the theme is space and the Moon."

The second half of that night's performance will centre on the music of Debussy, Offenbach, and Beethoven, who's celebrating his 250th Birthday this year.

Wheatley-Brown, says the Saturday show is all about the kids when they perform "Peter and the Wolf."

"It's a children's classic fairytale. Children are all free and adults are $10. So, it's a really wonderful opportunity to introduce children to classical music."

"Peter and the Wolf" goes Saturday at 2 o'clock at the High River United Church.
