The High River RCMP Detachment will be needing a new Staff Sergeant following the retirement of Robin Alexander last month.

The Town's Police Committee says they'll have a hand in selecting who the new "Police Chief" will be.

Committee Chair Terry Coleman says it's supposed to be a collaborative effort, and they're looking forward to working with the RCMP this time out.

"The last time that wasn't tested because they put forward this particular candidate, and we agreed to it. They said if we didn't find him to be a good fit, then they would have to reconsider. But, we didn't get to that stage so I'm not quite sure how that might have worked out."

Coleman says the final decision on who to post as Detachment Commander in High River is up to the RCMP, but he says if the person isn't a "good fit" for High River the committee can let the RCMP know that and move forward from there.

Coleman says he expects the search to start in earnest in the New Year, with someone hopefully in place within a few months.

He says for the time being High River is being well served by an acting Staff Sergeant overseeing the day to day operations.
