It's that time of year again where the weather gets warmer and the snow starts to melt.

High River is back to keeping a close eye on the water levels in the Highwood River once again.

The Town of High River says as always they have a plan to keep a watchful eye on the river.

This year they're using LED signs to provide the community with a "status at a glance" in high traffic areas, the Town will be sticking to their regular system of the four colours representing the threat level of the river.

- Green (Normal)

- Yellow (High Stream Flow Advisory)

- Orange (Flood Watch)

- Red (Flood Warning)

The signs will be updated daily to provide the community with up-to-date information on the status of the Highwood River.

All of this information will also be available on the Town's Facebook and through the Emergency Notifications app should the River become an immediate threat.

High River Mayor Craig Snodgrass says the town is well versed in flood preparation.

“When it comes to managing flood risk, we are not looking at or taking our cues from the whole province. We are looking to the scientific data provided by their experts to compile local observations and determine when action is required. It is no different than relying on AHS as the experts on COVID-19, except, in this case, we call the shots. We know the Town, we built the infrastructure to protect the community, we are recognized as experts in flood planning and response and we know this river.”

River Monitoring by the Town will continue until the end of June.
